Noisy all the time, even when idle
Something is loading the processor in the background. Open Task Manager (Ctrl + Shift + Esc) and sort by the CPU column. Common culprits: a stuck Windows update, cloud sync, the antivirus, a browser with dozens of tabs — and crypto-mining viruses that use your computer to make money for someone else. On protection: how to protect your computer from viruses.
Noisy and hot under load
If the laptop roars in games and videos and the case is hot, there is probably dust inside. Especially in Batumi: humid air and dust clog the heatsink quickly. The fix is cleaning the cooling system. I replace thermal paste only if I see during cleaning that it has dried out — here is why.
Rattling, whistling, grinding
- A rattling or grinding fan — a worn bearing, or a cable or dust touching the blades.
- Clicking from a hard drive — a warning sign: back up your files now.
- A thin whine under load — “coil whine”, usually harmless.
What I do
I find what is loading the system, remove junk and viruses, and clean out the dust. In a desktop PC I can replace a case or CPU fan (normal work when building). If a faulty laptop fan is the noise, it is replaced at a service centre with parts for that model; I will point you there.
