How to ask ChatGPT about a Windows error — and when to call a technician
More and more clients tell me: “I asked ChatGPT, did what it said, and it got worse”. It really can help with a computer if you ask the right way and know which advice is safe. Here is a technician’s view.
How to ask properly
- The system version: Windows 11 or 10 (Win + R → winver).
- The laptop or PC model — from the sticker underneath.
- The exact error text or a screenshot (Win + Shift + S).
- What you were doing before the error and what you have already tried.
- Example: “Windows 11, laptop [model]. After an update there is no sound and the device list is empty. What is safe to try, step by step?”
Advice that is usually safe
- Restarting, checking settings, choosing the sound output device.
- Updating a driver from the laptop maker’s website.
- Windows troubleshooters.
- Uninstalling the program the problems started with.
Advice that means stop
- Command Prompt or PowerShell commands you do not understand.
- Editing the registry, disabling services or protection.
- Formatting a drive, factory resets, partition work — back up your files first.
- Downloading programs and “optimisers” from unknown sites.
- Anything involving the BIOS, passwords or BitLocker encryption.
When to call a technician
If the computer will not turn on, files have disappeared, the drive clicks, the error keeps coming back, or you are unsure of the next step — stop. The more “experiments”, the harder it is to save the data. Common cases: computer won’t turn on, drive not detected, black screen.
