Computer not detecting a drive or USB stick: how not to lose your files
You plug in a USB stick and nothing happens. Or Windows suddenly offers to “format the disk”. The main rule: do not agree to formatting until your files are saved. Then go step by step.
A USB stick or external drive does not appear
- Try another USB port — preferably directly on the computer, not in an adapter.
- A 2.5" external drive sometimes lacks power from one port or a thin cable — try another cable.
- Open Disk Management (right-click Start): if the drive is there but has no letter, assign one.
- Try it on another computer: that shows whether the problem is the drive or the computer.
“You need to format the disk” or a RAW partition
Windows no longer understands the file system: after a sudden power-off, a crash or drive errors. The files are usually still there. Do not format and do not write anything to that drive. Files must be recovered to another drive.
I had a night call-out recently where a laptop partition had turned RAW — the files were saved without formatting anything.
A new second drive is not visible
Windows does not show a new drive until it is initialised and a partition is created — in the same Disk Management. If the drive is not visible even there, check the cables (in a PC) or the BIOS settings.
When to call a technician
- The drive clicks, grinds or disappears by itself.
- The drive holds the only copy of important photos and documents.
- The drive has turned RAW or asks to be formatted.
What I do
I check the drive’s health, restore access and recover the files with software onto your new drive — data recovery from 50 GEL. If the drive is physically damaged (clicks, is not detected), it needs a lab — I will tell you honestly. More: computer repair in Batumi.
