Replacing the drive with an SSD: an old laptop like new
If the laptop takes two or three minutes to start and programs open “thoughtfully”, an old hard drive is almost always to blame. Switching to an SSD is the most noticeable improvement for little money.
What an SSD gives you
Windows starts in 15–30 seconds instead of several minutes, programs open at once, and the laptop does not “hang” during updates. An SSD is also silent and does not mind being moved around.
How to tell if you have a hard drive
- Task Manager (Ctrl + Shift + Esc) → Performance → Disk: the type is shown — SSD or HDD.
- If the disk is constantly at 100% and the computer is slow, it is almost certainly an HDD.
- Laptops made before 2018–2019 were often sold with a hard drive.
Which SSD to buy
- I check the model and tell you which slot the laptop has: SATA 2.5" or M.2 (and which M.2 exactly).
- Capacity — 500 GB or more: Windows with updates and programs takes about 60–80 GB.
- Buy a drive from a known brand from a seller with a warranty. You buy it yourself — I add no mark-up to parts.
How I do the replacement
- I back up your files.
- I fit the new SSD and install a clean Windows with drivers and programs — or move the current system if that is more convenient.
- I put your files back. The old drive can stay as a second one (in a PC or a USB enclosure) for an archive.
- I check that everything works and show you.

FAQ
Questions and answers
Is an SSD worth it in an 8–10-year-old laptop?
If the processor handles your tasks, yes — it is the cheapest way to extend its life. If not, I will tell you honestly that a new one is better value.
Will I lose my files?
No: before the replacement I make a copy and put the files back on the new drive.
How long does it take?
Usually 2–3 hours in one visit, including installing Windows and programs.
