Should you replace the thermal paste in a laptop? My experience as a technician in Batumi

Thermal paste replacement is offered today almost as mandatory maintenance. I disagree and do not offer this service myself. Here is why, with the example of a client whose laptop stopped turning on after such a replacement.

My view on thermal paste

I have worked with computers since the early 2000s and have been doing call-outs since 2006. In all that time I have never seen a failure caused by thermal paste that nobody had touched. I have never replaced it on my own laptops, and everything worked without problems.

This is my experience and my opinion, not a law of nature. Thermal paste is there to transfer heat quickly from the processor to the heatsink. If it was applied properly, in my observation it works fine for many years — I have seen this many times in old computers. So I consider replacing it "preventively" every two or three years unnecessary.

An example from practice

A young man called me: his MSI Katana laptop, about three years old, would not turn on. He had replaced the thermal paste himself and this was the result.

Symptoms:

  • pressing the button does not start the laptop;
  • the fans are silent;
  • the heatsinks get warm;
  • only the keyboard backlight comes on.

I removed the cover and inspected the board. The client said he had touched it with a screwdriver. I saw a scratch, but only in the protective coating; the trace was intact. The main thing I noticed was different: the battery had stayed connected, and the client confirmed he had not disconnected it before working.

My assumption: the screwdriver may have shorted something on the live board, and the probability of that is very high. But it is an assumption, not a proven fact. Only measurements in a workshop will show for sure.

I did not bring the laptop back to life on the spot. I do not repair boards, so I said so honestly and recommended two repair shops in Batumi. The visit took about 15 minutes. The client admitted it was his mistake.

A good gaming laptop was left unable to start because of work that was possibly not needed. Details of the case are in a separate story: MSI Katana laptop would not turn on after a thermal paste change: what I found in Batumi.

What I look at instead of thermal paste

I believe it is more important to look after the software side so the computer works properly:

  • Windows: unnecessary startup programs, system errors;
  • drivers: whether the right ones are installed and properly configured.

Often that is enough, and there is no need to open the laptop.

What I advise

  • Do not replace thermal paste "on a schedule".
  • In my opinion it is worth replacing only after a heatsink or processor replacement.
  • Do not touch the processor and graphics card without need, especially if the laptop is already several years old.
  • If you do open the laptop, disconnect the battery first.

When you need a technician and when you can do it yourself

You can update drivers, clean up startup programs and check power settings yourself. Going inside a laptop, to the processor and graphics card, without experience or need is not worth it: what looks simple easily turns into an expensive repair. If the issue is Windows, drivers, Wi-Fi or settings, that is for me. If it is the board, you need a shop with equipment, and I will say so directly.
