Laptop from Turkey or Europe: keyboard, language and Windows
Batumi has many laptops bought in Turkey, Germany, Poland or the UAE: cheaper, a gift, brought along when moving. At home it turns out the letters on the keys are different, Windows is in Turkish or German, and the layout types the wrong characters. Almost all of this can be solved, but some things are worth knowing in advance.
What is usually wrong
- A different keyboard. Turkish (Q or F) and German (QWERTZ) layouts place keys differently, add extra letters, and Y and Z are swapped.
- Windows in another language. Menus, error messages and settings are in Turkish, German or Arabic.
- No familiar letters on the keys. You can touch-type, but it is inconvenient.
- Warranty. Often valid only in the country of purchase.
Windows language — fixable
In Windows 11 and 10 you can usually add English (or Russian) as the display language in settings, and the menus switch. But there are single-language editions: their system language can’t be changed, only reinstalled with a suitable edition. How to find your edition — in the Windows editions guide.
Keyboard — partly
- Any layout can be set in Windows: English, Russian, Georgian — and switched as usual.
- But the letters on the keys stay Turkish or German: software can’t change the physical keyboard.
- The fix is transparent stickers or touch-typing. Replacing a laptop keyboard is a job for a repair shop.
- If Y and Z are mixed up on a German keyboard, that is exactly the reason: the wrong layout is selected in Windows.
If the laptop has no Windows
Laptops from shops in Turkey and Europe also come with Free DOS — no operating system. Then official Windows is installed straight away in the language you need. More — laptop with Free DOS: what to do.
Warranty
Check with the seller whether the warranty is valid in Georgia. Most often it is only valid in the country of purchase, so keep the receipt and box. Reinstalling Windows usually doesn’t void the warranty, but opening the case may.
