What FreeDOS is and why it's there
FreeDOS is a free operating system. Manufacturers install it to lower the laptop's price — they don't have to pay for a Windows licence. A large share of laptops sold in Batumi stores, including Alta, Zoommer and others, come with FreeDOS instead of Windows for exactly this reason.
When you turn on such a laptop, you might see: a black screen with a blinking cursor, the text "FreeDOS 2.x", a message like "No bootable device", or a basic service menu. This isn't a fault — the laptop is fine. It simply has no proper operating system installed.
Can FreeDOS be used for everyday work
No. FreeDOS is a text-based command system from the 1990s. You can't run a browser, Office, messaging apps, or any modern software on it. For normal use you need Windows 10 or Windows 11.
Many buyers don't know this in advance — especially if they bought the laptop online or chose it purely on price. This is a very common situation, nothing to worry about.
Can Windows be installed yourself
Technically yes, but it requires: a bootable USB drive with a Windows image, knowing how to enter the BIOS, configuring Secure Boot and TPM correctly, and finding and installing every driver for your specific laptop model.
If something goes wrong, the laptop might fail to boot, or Wi-Fi and sound might not work. A technician typically completes the installation in 30–60 minutes. Doing it yourself without experience can take several hours with no guarantee of success.
