Laptop for school and online learning: what to set up for your child
After moving, many children study online at a school from their home country or attend a local school and do homework on a computer. Study tech is not just a laptop: it needs setting up so the child studies rather than plays, and so mum doesn’t have to figure it all out alone.
Laptop or tablet
- For online lessons and written work a laptop is easier: a keyboard, a big screen, several windows.
- For younger children a tablet with a keyboard is often enough.
- 8 GB of memory and an SSD are enough — no expensive gaming laptop needed.
- A headset with a microphone is a must.
Software for school
- Zoom, Google Meet or Microsoft Teams — whatever the school uses.
- Google Classroom or the school’s online diary.
- Office or Google Docs for assignments.
- Shortcuts to the needed sites on the home screen — easier for the child.
A child account and controls
- A separate child account in Windows or a Google / Apple family group.
- Time and app limits, website filtering.
- A report for mum: how much time, spent on what.
- More about phones — “How to set up a child’s phone safely”.
Printer and study place
- A printer with a scanner — print assignments and scan notebooks for the teacher.
- Stable Wi-Fi in the child’s room.
- Camera and light as for adult calls: window to the side, face visible.
How I can help
I will choose a laptop or tablet for study, set up the school software, a child account, parental controls, printer and Wi-Fi, and show the child and mum how to use them. Setup — from 50 ₾. If needed — I help choose and buy.
FAQ
Questions and answers
Can controls be set up if the child already knows the passwords?
Yes. We change the administrator password and create a separate child account.
Is an antivirus needed?
The built-in Windows Defender is usually enough if updates are on and the child account has no admin rights.
