Home camera and video doorbell: how to choose and set up safely
When you live alone, it is calmer to see who is at the door and get a notification if something happens at home while you are away. Today you don’t need a complex system for this: one device and an app on your phone are enough. The key is to set it up so the camera protects you instead of opening your flat to strangers.
What there is
- A video peephole — instead of an ordinary one: you see who is at the door on a screen or phone without opening.
- A smart doorbell with a camera — a notification on your phone when someone rings, and talking through the app even when you are out.
- A Wi-Fi camera inside — check that everything is fine while you are away; motion alerts.
How to choose
- An app in English with good reviews.
- Recording to the cloud or a memory card — and it is clear where videos are stored.
- Two-factor sign-in for the app.
- For a rented flat — models that need no drilling, on a battery or a mount that won’t damage the door (better agreed with the landlord).
Safe setup
- Your own strong password instead of the default — first of all.
- Only you have access; if you shared it with someone, check the list and remove extra people.
- Firmware updates turned on.
- The indoor camera is switched off or turned away when you are home — if that feels calmer.
- The camera is on your own Wi-Fi, not the neighbours’ or a shared building network.
What you may record
Your own flat and your own door — yes. The shared corridor, neighbours’ doors and other people’s windows are better left out: neighbours may object, and the rules about filming people should be respected. Point the camera at your entrance, not the whole stairwell.
How I can help
I will choose a device for your flat, set up the app, notifications, passwords and access only for you, and show how to watch and where recordings are stored. Setup — from 50 ₾. If the device needs mounting, tell me in advance and we will discuss it on site.
