Staying in touch from sea: what to set up at home first
A seafarer is calm at sea when home is calm. And it’s always during a contract that the Wi-Fi stops, mum’s phone “can’t call” and the TV “disappears”. Half of these problems can be removed in advance.
Family phones
- WhatsApp or Telegram with video calls — check together how to call you.
- Large font and a simple home screen for parents.
- A shared album: family adds photos, you see them when you have internet.
- Phone backup and passwords kept somewhere safe.
Home
- Wi-Fi: router checked, password written on paper next to it.
- TV and set-top box: a clear remote and a note “if it disappears, press…”.
- A technician’s number on the fridge — no need to wait for your return.
Money and safety
Warn your family: a “bank employee” never asks for SMS codes, and “your son is in trouble” calls are a common scam. Agree on a code word for emergencies.
How I can help
Before your contract I come to your home: set up family phones, Wi-Fi and TV, and leave notes. While you’re at sea, your family calls me and I come. We agree in advance.
