Digital fatigue: how to get your evening back
The phone keeps buzzing, chats never go quiet, work messages arrive at ten in the evening — and by the end of the day your head is “humming”. This is not a weakness of character: phones are designed to hold your attention. The good news — most of the load can be removed with settings in one evening.
Signs of digital fatigue
- You reach for the phone even when nothing has arrived.
- It’s hard to focus on one thing for longer than 10 minutes.
- In the evening you have no energy, although you aren’t physically tired.
- You fall asleep with the phone in your hand.
Step 1. Notifications — only from people
Open the notification settings and keep sound and pop-ups only for calls, messengers with your family and work chats. Shops, games, news, social media — silent or no notifications at all. On iPhone: Settings → Notifications. On Android: Settings → Notifications → App notifications.
Step 2. Muted groups
Mute noisy groups in WhatsApp and Telegram: Mute → Always. The messages won’t disappear — you will just read them when it suits you, not them. Work chats can have sound only during working hours.
Step 3. Focus and Bedtime modes
iPhone has Focus modes (Work, Sleep, Personal), Android has Do Not Disturb and Bedtime mode. Set a schedule: for example, from 21:00 to 8:00 only favourite contacts can call. This is the single most useful setting for a calm evening.
Step 4. Look at the numbers
Screen Time on iPhone and Digital Wellbeing on Android show how many hours go to each app. The goal is not to blame yourself, but to spot the one or two apps that take the most time and give them a limit.
Small habits that work
- Charge your phone away from the bed — buy an ordinary alarm clock.
- Move social media off the home screen into a folder.
- Answer messages in batches: 2–3 times a day, not every five minutes.
- Agree with colleagues after what hour work messages wait until morning.
If you need help
I can come and in one visit set up your phone and laptop for a calm mode: notifications, focus, muted groups, limits. Setup — from 50 ₾. If the tiredness looks like burnout and doesn’t go away, it is worth seeing a professional — settings are only part of the solution.
