Signed in with the wrong account
The licence belongs to a specific Microsoft account. In Word open File → Account and check which email you are signed in with. If you have several, sign out and sign in with the one Office was bought on.
The subscription has expired
Microsoft 365 works while the subscription is paid. Check “Services & subscriptions” in your Microsoft account: the expiry date and payment method. After payment Office activates by itself.
Activator or old-version leftovers
If a cracked Office was installed before, its services and tasks stay in the system and block legal activation. The fix: remove Office completely with Microsoft’s official tool, scan for viruses and reinstall Office with your own account.
Two Office versions at once
For example Office 2016 plus Microsoft 365 on top. Keep one — the one you have a licence for.
Time, internet and updates
- A wrong date and time blocks activation — turn on automatic time.
- Activation needs an internet connection.
