Guest Wi-Fi for a café, hotel or shop: fast and secure
The first thing guests ask for is the Wi-Fi password. If the network is slow, or shared with everything else, both your guests and your till suffer. Here is how to do it right — without expensive gear.
A separate network for guests
The golden rule: guests and your work devices live on different networks. The till, card terminal, office PC and cameras must never be visible from a guest’s phone. Most modern routers have a guest mode; larger spaces need access points with a guest network.
Password and QR code
- Simple but not obvious — not the venue’s phone number.
- A QR code on the table or counter: guests connect by pointing the camera.
- Change the guest password now and then; never share the work network password.
Speed and coverage
- Limit the speed per device so one guest cannot eat the whole line.
- Router in the middle of the room, not in the back office; access points on each hotel floor.
- Test the speed in far corners and on the terrace.
- A backup line if the till or bookings depend on the internet.
Security
Change the router’s default admin password, update the firmware and switch off unused features. Write down the passwords and a network map and keep them with the owner.
