Choosing laptops for employees: 7 questions before you buy
Companies often buy the "cheapest" laptops or "the same as the neighbours", and a year later staff complain that everything is slow. The mistake costs more than it seems: people’s time is worth more than the price difference. Here are the seven questions I ask before a purchase.
7 questions
- What does the employee do all day? Email and documents, accounting, design, video — everything else depends on it.
- How much memory? For office work today a sensible minimum is 16 GB; 8 GB quickly runs short with a browser, email and messengers.
- SSD and its size. SSD only; 512 GB is comfortable, 256 GB if files live on a server or in the cloud.
- Screen. IPS, Full HD; matte for all-day work. Cheap TN screens tire the eyes.
- Windows Home or Pro? For a company — Pro: disk encryption, management and connection to work services.
- Warranty and service in Batumi. Find out who will repair it under warranty and where.
- Identical models. One laptop type for everyone simplifies setup, spare parts and replacement.
Do not forget the setup
A new laptop is not yet a workplace. It needs accounts, email, printers, shared folders, antivirus, backups and disk encryption in case of theft. If every laptop is set up differently, nobody will remember what is where a year later.
How I help
I choose models for the tasks and budget, check them on delivery, set them up identically for all staff and leave a short guide. More: turnkey computers.
FAQ
Questions and answers
Can we buy a gaming laptop — it is more powerful?
Not for an office: it is heavy, loud and drains the battery faster. A business model with a good screen is better.
Laptop or desktop?
If the employee does not carry the computer around, a desktop is cheaper for the same power and easier to repair.
Should we buy used?
Off-lease business models can be a good option, but only after checking the battery, drive and screen.
