Replacing a wall light, ceiling light or chandelier in Batumi
The most common small electrical job in Batumi flats is changing a light: an old wall lamp for a new one, a chandelier after renovation, a hallway bulb for an LED panel. Here is what to prepare so it is all done in one visit.
What I do
- Take down the old light, wall lamp or chandelier.
- Mount and connect the new one to the existing wiring: fixing, terminals, testing.
- Connect a chandelier to a two-gang switch — if the wires for it are already there.
- Replace lamp holders if the old ones are melted or bulbs wobble in them.
- Check that the switch breaks the live wire, not the neutral.
What to prepare
- The light itself and bulbs for it (check the base: E27, E14, GU10 are different).
- For a heavy chandelier, information about the ceiling: concrete, plasterboard, stretch ceiling. A stretch ceiling needs a mounting plate installed before the ceiling is fitted.
- Access to the fuse box to switch off the circuit.
- A stepladder if you have one; if not, tell me in advance.
The chandelier lights up halfway
A common question: "I switch it on and half the bulbs light." Usually there are three reasons:
- A two-gang switch: each key turns on its own group — that is not a fault.
- Bulbs in one group have burned out or the contact in the holders has loosened.
- The group wires were mixed up during connection, or a terminal contact has loosened.
Bedside and hallway wall lights
Wall lights often hang on wires from the wall without a proper terminal — over time the twisted joint heats up and the light starts to flicker. When replacing, I make a proper connection with terminals so there is no need to come back to that spot.
What I do not do
New circuits from the fuse box, chasing walls for new wires and installing fuse boxes are work for an electrical installer. If the job is like that, I will say so honestly and suggest whom to contact.
How much it costs
From 50 ₾ per visit. Several lights in one visit is better value than calling a technician for each. I quote in advance — send a photo of the old and new light.
