Light switch not working: replacement in Batumi
A switch is the hardest-working small thing in a flat: it is pressed dozens of times a day. Over time it sticks, crackles, sparks or stops turning on the light. Replacing it is simple work, but it needs correct wiring.
Signs it is time to replace it
- The rocker sticks or works only every other time.
- You hear crackling and see a spark inside.
- The body is warm or darkened.
- The light comes on but flickers when you touch the rocker.
- Nothing happens after pressing — and the bulb is fine.
Which switch to fit
- One-gang — the ordinary one.
- Two-gang — for a chandelier with two groups of bulbs (if the right wires run from the switch).
- Two-way — to switch the light from two places: at both ends of a hallway, by the door and by the bed. Wires between the two switches are needed.
- Illuminated — convenient at night, but with some LED bulbs it makes a switched-off bulb glow faintly.
An important detail when replacing
The switch must break the live wire. If it is on the neutral, the holder stays live with the light off — changing the bulb is dangerous and LED bulbs may flicker. I check this with every replacement.
What I do
- Switch off the circuit and check there is no voltage.
- Remove the old switch and check the wires.
- Fit the new one: one-gang, two-gang, illuminated or not.
- Check that all rockers and lights work.
How much it costs
From 50 ₾ per visit. You can buy the switch in advance — send a photo of the old one and I will suggest a compatible one.
FAQ
Questions and answers
Can a two-gang switch replace a one-gang one?
Only if three wires run from the switch to the chandelier. If the cable has two cores, a new circuit is needed, and that is no longer a small repair.
The switch crackles — is that dangerous?
Yes: a contact is sparking inside. Better not to use it and replace it.
Will you replace a switch and a socket in one visit?
Yes, small jobs are best collected together.
