Check the obvious things first

Before calling a technician, check: is the battery charged — plug in the charger and wait 10 minutes. Is the charging indicator lit — if not, the issue may be with the charger or the port itself. Try holding the power button for 10–15 seconds, then turn it on again. Disconnect all USB devices and external monitors — sometimes they interfere with startup.

Common causes of a black screen

Software-related — the Windows bootloader has failed (often after an unsuccessful update), and the system can't boot from the drive. This is usually fixed by reinstalling or repairing the bootloader without losing data.

Hardware-related — a RAM stick has come loose from its slot (especially after transport), the graphics card overheated and shut down, or the hard drive has failed.

The most common cause among clients is software-related. Reinstalling Windows resolves it in 60–70% of cases.

What definitely not to do

Don't take the laptop apart yourself — you risk damaging cables and boards. Don't pour anything on "the contacts". Don't put it in the freezer (that's a myth from the 2000s). Don't download "black screen fix" programs — these are usually malware.

The safest step is to describe the symptom to a technician and wait for the visit. The description alone can often narrow down the cause before arrival.
