Which computers you need
- Reception: a reliable PC with an SSD, a printer and, if needed, a document scanner.
- Treatment rooms: a PC or laptop at the chair for charts and images, with a monitor that suits the dentist.
- Identical setup everywhere — easier to support and replace.
Patient database and images
Booking and clinical software are configured by their suppliers. My part is making sure the computers and network meet the software’s requirements, the database is reachable from the right places and images open without delay — and above all, where the database lives and how it is backed up.
Backups
A daily automatic backup of the database and images to a separate drive, plus a second copy off site. A monthly check that the backup restores. Losing patient records is both a medical and a legal problem.
Network, power and protection
- Cabled network for treatment rooms; patient Wi-Fi kept separate.
- A UPS for the database PC, router and reception.
- An account per staff member, screen lock, encrypted laptops.
- Windows updates and security, and care with email attachments.
